Restaurateurs Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato opened Brasserie Cognac de Monsieur Ballon in April 2008. The duo brought their love for French culture and cuisine to New York City and gave the Big Apple an authentic slice of such, with a brasserie style menu combining French classics with modern creations. Situated on a quaint corner on the Upper East Side with a delightful outdoor café, this neighborhood restaurant provides fantastic alfresco dining in the warmer seasons. Brasserie Cognac’s two-story space is as inviting as it is charming, not to mention elegant and sophisticated. The popular vibrantly purple upstairs dining room with vintage chandeliers and street views, is booked frequently for private events and intimate dinners.

We are fortunate that Brasserie Cognac has generously offered us access to the full menu for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, we can only choose one item from each section!


MENU (vegetarian but not vegan friendly)

Appetizers (choice of):
  • CHESTNUT VELOUTÉ creamy soup with bacon and chives
  • PEAR SALAD arugulawalnutsfetaham (can be ordered without ham and/or feta for vegetarians/vegans)
  • SOUPE À L’OIGNON (vegetarian) with Gruyere cheese gratiné on croutons 
  • ESCARGOTS prepared “Burgundy style” with garlic butter & fresh parsley
  • TARTE PISSALADIÈRE anchovies, sweet caramelized onions, Niçoise olives, thyme, olive oil on warm puff pastry (can be ordered without anchovies for vegetarians/vegans)

  • ROASTED TURKEY with black truffle butter & Cognac gravy; served with a side of stuffing or mac & cheese and mixed winter vegetables
  • PAIN PERDU brioche stuffing, bread, eggs, chicken broth, mushrooms, leeks
  • TRUFFLE MAC & CHEESE with ham
  • GRATIN (vegetarian) pumpkin and winter squash cheesy onion
  • MUSSELS with white wine sauce, shallots, cream and parsley
  • ROASTED SALMON with lentil ragout and red wine sauce
  • STEAK with baby carrots, asparagus, roasted baby potatoes, bordelaise sauce

Desserts (choice of):
  • CRÈME BRÛLÉE (vegetarian)
  • PUMPKIN PIE (vegetarian) with meringue
  • TARTE TATIN (vegetarian) Apple tart, crispy phyllo dough, vanilla ice cream & roasted almonds
  • PROFITEROLES (vegetarian) Vanilla ice cream, warm chocolate sauce & roasted almonds
  • VALRHONA CHOCOLATE CAKE (vegetarian) Filled with chocolate, raspberry mousse, a touch of Grand Marnier & raspberry coulis
  • ICE CREAM & SORBETS (CHOOSE 3) ice cream (vegetarian): Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Pistachio. Sorbet (vegan): Coconut, Raspberry, Lime, Mango
